Growth Mindset at The Annunciation Catholic Junior School

“I can’t do that...”

“I’m not good at this...”

 “I just can’t do Maths”

“She’s so smart.  I’ll never be that smart”

“It’s good enough”

People with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence is fixed at birth and doesn’t change or changes very little with practice.  People with a growth mindset believe that intelligence can be developed.  They practise and work hard to learn more.

Our children are encouraged to choose their own challenge in lessons.  This allows them to challenge themselves and no ceiling is put on their learning.

The power of YET.

We have boards and posters in classrooms and around the school to motivate us to keep trying and to remind us to strive for our best by constantly challenging ourselves.  If we find something hard, that’s OK, we are learning.  One of the most important words we use is YET.  It reminds children they may not be able to do something right now, but with hard work and resilience they will learn to.

Instead of thinking...

Try saying...

“I can’t do that...”

“I can’t do that...YET”

“I’m not good at this...”

“What am I missing?”

“I just can’t do Maths”

“I’m going to train my brain in Maths”

“She’s so smart.  I’ll never be that smart”

“I’m going to figure out how she does it so I can try it”

“It’s good enough

“Is it really my best work?”
