As a main curriculum subject, we place a high emphasis on the teaching of Mathematics at The Annunciation Catholic Junior School. Mathematics involves the teaching of arithmetic and reasoning and encouraging children to be confident and fluent in these. By the end of Year 6, our children are equipped with skills in these areas that provide them with the foundations needed for future learning and to support them in their daily lives. After all, Maths is everywhere and we use it everyday.
Mathematics is taught everyday throughout the school. Alongside this, children have arithmetic sessions during the week. We follow a Concrete (using physical resources), Pictorial (representing using pictures) and Abstract (using only numbers) approach to allow children to build in confidence in all areas of Mathematics. When teaching reading to young children, we understand that children need to have seen what the word is to understand it. Putting together the letters c- a- t would be meaningless and abstract if children had no idea what a cat was or had never seen a picture. Mathematics is exactly the same. Many mathematical concepts can be equally meaningless without a concrete resource or picture to go with it.
Our school intent places a large emphasis on vocabulary. It is for this reason that every lesson has a focus on vocabulary and new words and taught and clarified at the beginning of every lesson. Pictures accompany new words so all children have access to understand what new vocabulary means. Across all lessons, children actively use their Vocabulary diaries and are encouraged to use dictionaries and thesauruses when needed. We use ‘flashbacks’ at the beginning of each lesson so recap knowledge learnt last lesson, last week, last topic and last year.
Pupils all have a Maths Family Scrapbook as part of our work with National Numeracy, which encourages families to share Mathematic activities.
